The difference between cast iron and nodular cast iron
Graphite in gray cast iron is in the form of flake graphite in nodular cast iron structure is in the form of SPHEROIDAL graphite, the difference in structure leads to their performance also has a great difference. The strength and plasticity of gray cast iron with low lamellar graphite cutting matrix cause stress concentration, high brittleness and good anti-vibration performance. Mainly used to produce a number of low strength requirements, the main compression stress of various boxes, such as the base. Ductile CAST IRON: SPHEROIDAL graphite has the lowest splitting effect on the Matrix and the least stress concentration effect, so its strength is very high, it can be mixed with medium carbon steel, it can give full play to the Matrix properties, and it has certain plasticity and good toughness. It is often used to make workpieces with high strength and toughness and complex shape which have better casting performance than steel, such as crankshaft and connecting rod of internal combustion engine. Ductile iron can also be generally strengthened by heat treatment, while gray iron can not generally be heat treated to improve the strength of flake graphite. Compared with cast iron, Ductile Iron has absolute advantage in strength. Ductile iron has a tensile strength of 60K, whereas cast iron has a tensile strength of 31K. Ductile iron has a yield strength of 40K, whereas cast iron does not exhibit yield strength and eventually breaks. The strength ratio of nodular cast iron is much better than that of cast iron. Ductile iron has the same corrosion resistance as cast iron. The strength of ductile iron is comparable to that of cast steel. Ductile Iron has higher yield strength, the lowest yield strength is 40K, but the yield strength of cast steel is only 36k. In most municipal applications, such as water, brine and steam, the corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance of ductile iron are better than that of cast steel. Because of the microstructure of SPHEROIDAL graphite cast iron, ductile iron is better than cast steel in reducing vibration ability, so it is more advantageous to reduce stress. One of the important reasons for the selection of nodular cast iron is its excellent properties. The Superior Properties of Ductile Iron make the material more popular, more efficient, and less costly to machine. Sometimes, ductile iron is called the best of both worlds Ductile iron has the strength of cast steel and excellent corrosion resistance of cast iron.
